KOCHI: Customs officials seized 4kg gold from 24 aircarat purity hidden inside the toilet of an Indigo flight (6E068) early on Friday morning at Cochin international airport.
Officials belonging to the air intelligence unit seized four bars of gold, valued at Rs 1.1 crore, wrapped in adhesive tape and stuck to the floor using double-sided mounting tape in a recess below the wash basin in the toilet of the aircraft.
"The person who tried to smuggle the gold hasn't been identified. This is the third time that we are seizing gold from a flight toilet and this is the biggest haul.
"We suspect that the smugglers planned to take away the gold when the aircraft goes to a domestic service,".
The seizure was led by a team of officers led by assistant commissioners of customs Sanjay Banagrtale.
